Better Late Than Never...I Guess.

Image
This actuall happened August of 2016 but the novelty of working at the ferry wore off and there were too many unusual/unfortunate events to blog. Indeed. You don't say.

Bird of Prey Causes Traffic Jam

Image
This little birdie landed in the traffic lane and decided to stop people from getting on the ferry. Tom tried to lure him over to the side with bits of hot dog, but the fledgling would have non of that nonsense. I tried to get him to step up onto a broom handle so that I could move him. He grabbed on with one foot, then changed his mind and attacked a guy who was trying to take his picture. Charlie shooed him over to the railing with the broom and we were able to get some cars through, until a minivan with a roof rack caught his eye and he flew onto the roof rack. The woman driving the minivan pleaded with him to please move because she really needed to go on the ferry. Just then Department of Wildlife woman showed up with a net and took him away.

Another Jed Story

As Jed was singing, "This is the line that never ends." I realized that he reminds me of Jack Black. Anyway, he was loading the boat and a woman was so into her phone that she didn't realize that the cars in front of her had driven onto the ferry. He yelled, "VASHON! LET'S GO!" She didn't notice. He whistled really loudly. She didn't look up. He radioed up to the boat, "Cathlamet cabin, I have a sleeper. Can I get a whistle?" "Sure." And the Captain just laid on the ferry horn. Not even a polite, honk, honk, but a full on 5 second long blast at least. It just kept going and going. When you're right in front of a ferry, the horn is really loud! "Thanks." "No problem." The woman looked up, realized that everyone was looking at her, and did a Who? Me? Jed gave her a  Right this way. gesture .  It was the funniest thing I've seen in a very long time.

First notable ferry story

Today while directing traffic up at the street, a guy handed me a "homemade watermelon lollipop". I thanked him and told him that he was amazing. There was no way I was going to eat it. When I came down to the ticket booths, I showed it to my co-worker, Jed. He said that he wanted it so I gave it to him and told him to let me know if he started to smell colors after he ate it. Apparently there were no side effects, at least not that he admitted to.

My New Life

I've decided to blog any funny, weird, interesting stories from my new job at Washington State Ferries in case I want to write a book someday. Today in training for WSF the quote of the day is: We're dealing with the public and the public is not stable. Expect the unexpected." Some form of this quote will probably be my book title.

I guess nothing good happened in 2012. Finally, we have a new quote of the day!

Today's quote is from Ian Todd. ME: Did you scream like a little girl? IAN: "No, I screamed like a little girl who doesn't have to question her manhood."

Rebecca's Crabbing Rap

Sittin' here with Allison Down by the pier Bored as hell Too young to drink beer. Tryin' to pass time, bustin' them rhymes. They be all like, "Becky, where'd you find this jazz?" Whatchu talkin' 'bout? I'm pulling this outta my ass!

Quote of the day!!

Today's quote comes from Mike Patricelli. "I think we came from the era of Tards, But we were, and are now WAY cool." So true, Mike!

Another snow day, another bunch of kids.

Image
This time it was Kenneth who caused the Re-Take. Then, sadly, after picture time was done I realized that Rachael was missing from the photo. Back Row: Joaquin, Tajinique, Rebecca, Daniel, Tim, Jayden, Emilio. Front Row: Kevin, Alissa, Kenneth.

Teenagers in the 'Hood

Image
The kids were so adorable, watching YouTube videos and laughing together, so I had to take a picture of them. But then Kevin looked dumb so I said, "Try again and this time look cute." Anisa popped up out of nowhere; I didn't even know that she was there. Johnny looks just the same, weird and creepy. Back row: Jayden Rachael Johnny Alissa Rebecca Middle: Chris Kevin Jessica Front: Anisa

Conversations at the Swanstrom House.

Image
Me: I vacuumed under the couch today. Kevin: What did you find? Me: What makes you think that I found something? Kevin: Oh, You found something! Trust me! Me: OK, I found 6 pencils.... Kevin: Sorry about that. Me: And one Hello Panda. Kevin: Sorry about that. Me: And a whole lot of crumbs. Kevin: And some pretzels? Me: No, that was last time. I've vacuumed since pretzel day. (One day after this conversation, the kids left the cushions so crooked that I had to straighten them and I found a glow stick and a quarter.)

Quote of the Day

"You have such weird taste in music, but I like it." Today's quote is by Kevin Schroeder as I was singing Crash Test Dummies - I Think I'll Disappear Now. "Running into you like this without warning is like catching a sniff of tequila in the morning, but I'll try, try to keep my food down. It's quite an aftertaste that you've left now that you're not around."

This is what Fish N Chips night looks like before....

Sorry, I didn't take any photos of what it looks like after.

New Additions to the Family

Image
Here are the new rabbits, Carmel and J.P. Marshy. I tried to get the kids to give them better names. I voted for pistachio and Mega Dust Bunny. I was out-voted. J.P. Marshy is short for Jet Puffed Marshmallow.

The Importance of Good Parenting

Image
After the children have successfully learned to run with scissors and play with matches, the next step is alligators.

Quote for the Month of May

This quote comes from my Speech 100 teacher. "I just added it up, and 1 + 1 = he's not coming back."

Quote of the Week

Once again the quote of the week is by Jason W. "Of all my stalkers, you are my favorite."

Last weekend I had a completely surreal experience.

Image
All of my life I have been teased about my red hair. No one else in my family has red hair. My parents and sister all started out as blond children and then their hair got darker as they got older. None of my aunts or uncles or cousins look anything like me. I was teased about being the red-headed step-child, or the milkman’s kid. Even my eyes don’t match. My mom and sister both have blue eyes, mine are brown. In that respect, even other red-heads don’t look like me. It is more normal to have green eyes with red hair, second most common is blue. I always just figured it was because I’m so mixed up. I’m Scottish, Irish, English, Dutch, Welsh, German, Norwegian, and Bohemian. (The Bohemian part is the Vlach part) Once when I was about 12 years old, we were at my Grandma Vlach’s house. Everyone was teasing me with the normal “The milkman’s your real father” “Maybe it was the mailman.” And it wasn’t just the kids, sister and cousins, the adults were doing it too. When my Grandma came into ...

Quote of the Week

7/2/07 -Today Jason W. made my day by telling me that I was in his "inner circle of creamy goodness." What could be better than that?

I am offering a reward to anyone who gets Shawn Whatley to contact me. I'm not sure yet what the reward is....
